This oil-on canvas was created in 1835 by American artist George Catlin (1796-1872). Catlin spent a lot of time at a Sac and Fox village in 1835 and painted many of the members while there. He described Ah-móu-a (The Whale) as “holding a handsome war-club in his hand.” (Smithsonian)
