Excelsior Geyser, Yellowstone Park
This painting was made with watercolor and pencil on paper and was created ca. 1897 by American painter and printmaker Thomas Moran (1837-1926). At this time, Excelsior was one of the largest geysers in the world, very active and quite violent. Its powerful, hydrothermal explosions erupted as high as 300 feet and threw rocks as far as 500 feet. (Smithsonian)
