Old Mesilla Plaza
This oil-on-canvas painting was created ca. 1885 by French artist Léon Trousset (1838-1917). This painting of Mesilla, near Las Cruces, New Mexico, was at that time a colonial city under the rule of Spain's King Philip II. The dirt road leading to the horizon is the El Camino Real, the King's Highway, that connected trade centers from Santa Fe to Mexico and more. (Smithsonian)
