This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1848 by African-American landscape artist Robert S. Duncanson (1796-1886). The pastoral scene painted here is thought to represent the promised land of freedom that escaped slaves could reach by swimming across the Ohio River to the free states of the North. (Smithsonian)
