This oil-on-canvas painting was created ca. 1893 by Bulgarian-born American photographer and painter Antonion Zeno Shindler (1823-1899). Although better known for his photography, Shindler also painted portraits of Native Americans. The term “Eskimo” for Inuit and Yupik people is now considered derogatory. They lived in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Greenland, northern Canada, Alaska, and Siberia. (Smithsonian)
