This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1869 by American portrait and landscape artist John Mix Stanley (1814-1874). Red Jacket (1758-1830) was a famous chief of the Seneca tribe of the Iroquois Nation. Here he was painted while defending himself against a charge of witchcraft. (Smithsonian)
