This pen-and-ink and watercolor painting was created on paper mounted on paperboard ca. 1865 by American artist Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-1874). The unidentified Shoshone man smoking a pipe was in traditional dress, including a feathered headdress and intricately beaded clothing. (Smithsonian)
