The "Belle Creole" at New Orleans
This oil-on-canvas painting was created ca. 1847 by an unidentified artist. The Belle Creole was a sidewheel packet boat that worked on the Mississippi River. The steam-powered ship was built in Cincinnati in 1845 and was a regular, scheduled service for carrying mail, passengers, and freight between New Orleans and Vicksburg. It was destroyed in a steam line explosion in 1849. (Smithsonian)
