This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1883 by American Luminist painter Francis A. Silva (1835-1886). Silva’s parents did not wish him to become an artist. He was apprenticed to different trades until he found work painting poster advertisements. After his time with the Seventh Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War, he devoted the rest of his life to painting. (Smithsonian)
