This painting shows the battle between the USS Monitor and the USS Merrimack, the first fight between ironclad ships and a major naval battle of the Civil War on March 9, 1862. It also shows a Union ship sinking, rescue boats, and a Union artillery bunker and soldiers. The chromolithograph was published ca. 1889 by Kurz & Allison (LC-DIG-pga-01840).
