Wa-quóth-e-qua, The Bucks Wife, Wife of the Whale
This oil-on canvas was created in 1835 by American artist George Catlin (1796-1872). Catlin spent a lot of time at a Sac and Fox village in 1835 and painted many of the members while there. Wa-quóth-e-qua’s name translates in English to “The Buck’s Wife,” but in actuality, she was the wife of Ah-móu-a, “the whale.” (Smithsonian)
