Pash-ee-pa-hó, Little Stabbing Chief, a Venerable Sauk Chief
This oil-on canvas was created in 1835 by American artist George Catlin (1796-1872). Catlin spent a lot of time at a Sac and Fox village in 1835 and painted many of the members while there. Catlin noted that the chief “has long been the head civil chief of this tribe; but, as is generally the case in very old age, he has resigned the office to those who are younger and better qualified to do the duties of it.” (Smithsonian)
