Elk, Preparing for the Fight
Elk are also known as wapiti, Native American for “light-colored deer.” Found in western North America in mountainous areas, they migrate to find food in different seasons. They are herbivores and ruminants, meaning they have multiple compartments in their stomachs. They eat by chewing, regurgitating, and rechewing. They are one of the largest members of the deer family and can weigh up to 700 pounds. The males grow antlers.
