Armadillos, the only living mammal to be covered in bony plates, live mostly in the southern United States and south through Central and South America. The nine-banded armadillo, which only births quadruplets, is the only type found in the United States. These mammals rely heavily on their sense of smell to find underground food such as grubs and beetles.
