The roly-poly hippopotamus is the chubbiest land mammal on Earth. Its closest relatives are whales, pigs, and dolphins. The hippo is found in sub-Saharan Africa and spends most of its days in ponds, lakes, rivers, and mudholes because its skin needs to be kept wet. An adult hippo weighs up to four-and-a-half tons, and it can live as long as 40 years in the wild.
