William Leopold Doak, 1914
This photograph shows American Major League baseball pitcher William Leopold "Bill" Doak (1891-1954) preparing to pitch a ball. From 1912-1929, he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, and Brooklyn Robins. He earned the nickname “Spittin’ Bill” because of his innovative “spitball” pitch. The photograph was published in 1914.
