William J. Klem, Umpire
This photograph shows legendary National League umpire William “Bill” Klem watching the game with a face guard in his hand. He remained an umpire in Major League baseball for 37 years. Klem was known as “The Old Arbiter” due to his authoritarian, no-nonsense manner. He is remembered as the “father of baseball umpires.” The photograph was created in 1914.
