The world’s only alpine parrot, this large bird makes its home in New Zealand’s South Island. The island’s indigenous people, the Māori, gave it its name because it calls “kee-aa” when in flight. It is highly intelligent, curious, and has a sense of mischief—earning it the nickname “Clowns of the Mountains.”
