Maj. Gen. Joshua L. Chamberlain (Union)
In 1862, Chamberlain entered the war as a lieutenant colonel with the 20th Maine. He quickly mastered military tactics. These newly acquired skills were applied during the decisive battle of Little Round Top, Gettysburg, where he was instrumental in influencing the outcome of the battle. When his men were running out of ammunition, he had them fix bayonets and ordered a charge that totally surprised the Confederates and broke their attack.
