U.S. Army Signal Corps
This photograph shows members of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, a unit that played a vital role in communication and troop coordination on the battlefield during the American Civil War. One of their most important duties was the interception and translation of messages exchanged by Confederate signalmen. The photograph was created ca. 1863 by Mathew Brady.
