Major General Martin Luther Smith
This portrait of Major General Martin Luther Smith (1819-1866) shows one of the few northern-born generals to fight for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1842. He was a military engineer and was Gen. Robert E. Lee’s chief engineer for the Army of Northern Virginia. The photograph was created ca. 1863.
