African American Soldiers on Guard
This photo shows a pair of African American soldiers in Union Army uniforms as they protect a picket (guard) station in Dutch Gap, Virginia. The picket station was occupied by soldiers from the United States Colored Troops near the Dutch Gap canal. The photograph was created in November 1864.
