Mower entered the US Army in 1855 and served in the Mexican war. In the Civil War he was wounded and captured at Corinth, escaped, was recaptured and eventually exchanged. Gen. Mower commanded a brigade at Vicksburg, served in the Red River campaign and in Sherman’s March to the Sea.
