Maj. Gen Winfield Scott Hancock (Union)
Maj. Gen Winfield Scott Hancock (Union)
McClellan called him “Hancock the Superb.” Grant once said he “…never once committed in battle a blunder for which he was responsible….” Given command at Gettysburg after Reynolds was killed, Hancock was severely wounded on the third day of battle. He returned to command in March, 1864, commanding the Dept. of West Virginia.
