Maj. Gen. G. Stoneman (Union)
Gen. Stoneman was in charge of Ft. Brown, Texas, when the Civil War broke out and Texas left the Union. He refused the order of Gen. Twiggs to surrender the property of the United States to the state of Texas. Captured with the fall of the fort, he escaped and made his way to New York. Leading a cavalry raid in the Atlanta campaign he was captured and imprisoned for three months.
