Commander William D. Porter (USN)
Commander Porter was the son of Adm. David Porter. He commanded the gunboat USS Essex—named after the ship his father commanded in the War of 1812. He was severely scalded in action against Fort Henry on the Cumberland River when a shot from the fort pierced the number-two boiler of the Essex.
