Seacoast Mortars
This photograph shows the 13-inch seacoast mortars of Federal Battery No. 4 with officers of 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery in the area of Yorktown, Virginia. The Siege of Yorktown marked one of the first times mobile artillery was used in wartime. Each mortar weighed about 20,000 pounds. The photograph was created in May 1862 by James F. Gibson.
