Brig. Gen. Abner Doubleday was a captain of artillery at Fort Sumter under Major Anderson. He is credited with firing the first Federal gun against the Confederates. He fired in response to Beauregard’s batteries firing on Fort Sumter. In 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general and placed in charge of the defenses of Washington.
