When the Civil War began, James Garfield joined the army as lieutenant colonel and helped recruit the 42d Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He fought at Shiloh and Chickamauga, rose to major general, an as chief of staff of the Army of the Cumberland, displayed impressive talents as a planner and organizer. He became the 20th president of the United States in 1881.
