Gen. George Crook (1828-1890) began his Civil War service with the 36th Ohio. Appointed a brigadier general in 1862, he commanded troops at South Mountain, Antietam, Chickamauga and a division of cavalry in the Army of the Potomac in the Appomattox campaign.
