Confederate Col. John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916) formed and commanded the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, Confederate partisan rangers also known as Mosby’s Rangers. Mosby was greatly respected for his surprise attacks, quick raids and uncanny ability to disappear with his men from pursuit of the Union Army. For this he was nicknamed the “Gray Ghost.”
