Robert E. Lee was Federal commander of the forces that captured John Brown's body of men at Harper's Ferry. He resigned from the U.S. Army at the outbreak of the war in 1861. He was soon made General-in-Chief of the Confederate armies. Lee is ranked among history’s great military leaders because of his exceptional strategic and tactical skills.
