Arlington House
Arlington House
Armed Union soldiers stand outside the portico of Arlington House, the residence of Gen. Robert E. Lee and his family for 30 years before the Civil War. It was occupied by Federal forces after Virginia’s secession in 1861. This estate was first built as a memorial to George Washington by his adopted grandson. Today it is preserved as a memorial to Gen. Lee.
Photographed in June, 1864, by Andrew J. Russell.
