Prior to the Civil War, Gen. Miles had been a store clerk. He entered the war as a first lieutenant and was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 61st New York Infantry at Antietam. He was wounded three times, always returning to command upon recovery. Miles was awarded the Medal of Honor for
his performance at Chancellorsville. Prior to his death in 1925, he was the last surviving full-rank major general of the Civil War for either side.
