Maj. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith (CSA)
Maj. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith (CSA)
Maj. Gen. Smith commanded the five-state trans-Mississippi region of the Confederacy. In 1864, Union Gen. Banks tried to split this region by sending an expedition up the Red River in Louisiana. Gen. Smith, displaying brilliant strategy and audacity, was able to frustrate a Union force more than twice his troops’ size. He did not surrender until June 3, 1865, and was one of the last Confederate generals to do so.
