Deck of the Monitor (USN)
Deck of the Monitor (USN)
This picture was taken in July 1862 and shows the crew of the Monitor relaxing on deck. Here for a brief respite, they have escaped the murky quarters below decks and are idling in the sunshine, playing checkers, or reading a letter. In December of 1862 she sank off Hatteras taking sixteen of her crew with her.
Photographed by Mathew Brady.
