Signal Station, Elk Mountain
Signal Station, Elk Mountain
The photograph shows Union soldiers of the Signal Corps at a signal station that overlooked the battlefield of Antietam. One man is looking through a long telescope while another stands nearby with a flag on a long pole. The signal station was a hastily constructed building made of logs behind Confederate lines. The photograph was taken in 1862 by Timothy H. O’Sullivan.
