Gen. Upton was one of the rare military commanders who were capable of exemplary performance in different branches of the army. He started as a respected artillery commander, was moved to infantry and was equally proficient and later moved to cavalry where he performed superbly. He was wounded twice, once at Spotsylvania and again in the Shenandoah campaign.
