Gen. “Fightin” Joe Wheeler, entered the war as a lieutenant. of artillery with the 19th Alabama. He was later appointed chief of cavalry in the Army of the Mississippi. Wheeler was considered by many to be second only to Forrest as a raider. He commanded in many major battles including Shiloh and Chickamauga as well as opposing Sherman in the Atlanta campaign.
