Work Party at Butler’s Crow’s Nest
This photograph was taken at Butler’s Crow’s Nest, a Union observatory along the James River in Virginia during the American Civil War. It shows a work party and several mortars that were used during siege operations such as the Peninsula Campaign. These 10-inch mortars weighed about 5,700 pounds and fired an 87.5-pound round. The photograph was taken between June 1865 and April 1865.
