The Dictator, a 13-Inch Mortar
The Dictator, a 13-Inch Mortar
Soldiers stand next to a large cannon mounted on a small railroad flatcar in front of Petersburg, Virginia. Short, stubby mortars like “The Dictator,” a famous weapon of the Civil War, fired heavy shells in a high arc. These explosive shots could weigh as much as 200 pounds and scattered 10- to 20-pound fragments on their targets at high speeds.
Photographed on September 1, 1864.
