Richmond in Ruins
This photograph shows two soldiers and several boys amidst piles of cannonballs in the ruins of part of the city of Richmond, Virginia, during the American Civil War. Union troops captured Richmond on April 3, 1865, and set much of the city on fire. They helped to put out the fires the next day. The photograph was created in April 1865 by Andrew J. Russell.
