Sullivan’s Island, S.C., was one of many sites for Union batteries used to reduce Fort Sumter prior to the Union retaking of the fort from the Confederates. In this photograph two officers, Lt. Cmdr. Edward Barrett and Lt. Cornelius Schoonmaker, from the monitor USS Catskill, visil Battery Bee on Sullivan’s Island, Charleston harbor.
