Seated here in his Richmond, Virginia residence is Civil War Gen. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870). He is seated between his oldest son, George Washington Custis Lee (1832-1913, left) and his aide, Colonel Walter Taylor (right). This photograph was taken following his meeting with Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox to discuss terms of surrender and the end of the American Civil War.
