Appomattox Court House, Virginia
This photograph shows townspeople gathered in front of the Clover Hill Tavern in the village of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, after the end of the American Civil War. The Clover Hill Tavern was built in 1819 and is the oldest original structure in the village. The tavern offered the only overnight lodging, food, and a bar, and brought many visitors to the town. The photograph was created in April 1865 by Timothy H. O’Sullivan.
