Gen. Braxton Bragg (CSA)
Gen. Braxton Bragg (1817-1876) launched an attack September 19, 1863 against Union Gen. Rosecrans on the banks of a small North Georgia creek, Chickamauga. Routed on the second day of battle, the Union army retreated to Chattanooga. Gen. Bragg had won the greatest Confederate victory of the war but he refused to follow up on the advice of his generals to attack the retreating Federals thus losing the opportunity for complete destruction of the Union army.
