Rear Adm. W.B. Shubrick
Rear Adm. W. B. Shubrick (USN)
Shrubrick commanded a fleet of 19 vessels in 1859 sailing against Paraguay. He was highly admired by President Buchanan as the most successful naval commander of his time. In 1861 unsuccessful efforts were made to induce him to join the Confederates in behalf of his native South Carolina. In December 1861 he was placed on the retired list but he continued on duty as Chairman of the Light-House Board until 1870.
