This oil-on-canvas painting was created in 1697 by Dutch painter, draftsman, calligrapher and printmaker Ludolf Bakhuysen (1631-1708). Bakhuysen painted many marine subjects. This painting shows different sizes of ships in a rough sea, including a fishing boat, a tjalk, and a warship. (Rijksmuseum)
