Independence (Squire Jack Porter)
This oil painting was created on paperboard by American genre painter Frank Blackwell Mayer (1827-1899) in 1858. The portrait shows Jack Porter, a veteran of the War of 1812, who later earned a good living from Pennsylvania’s coal mines. He is posed at leisure, sitting on a bench and smoking a corncob pipe. His wife’s knitting sets on the windowsill beside him. (Smithsonian)
