This oil-on-canvas painting was created ca. 1852 by Prussian-American painter Severin Roesen (1816-1872). He was best known for his lush still lifes of fruit and flowers. One of many German refugees who fled to America from the 1848 peasant revolutions, his paintings appear to celebrate abundance and gratitude. (Smithsonian)
